Why I’m Becoming a Selfie Mom

Isn’t crazy how the word selfie only became a word less than 5 years ago? There are so many connotations that go along with the word, usually bad as people constantly post pics of themselves in provocative poses or just one after another.

So why would I want to be a selfie mom?

As a kid, I tried to avoid the camera. I felt awkward taking pictures and didn’t feel comfortable in large groups, usually standing at the back of any sports pictures.

Once I got to college, I realized there weren’t many pictures of myself throughout my teens, most of them taken my senior year of high school. So I worked on getting more pictures, doing my best to not think about how I looked.

Being the mom, I usually pull out my phone to get pictures of whatever is happening and often, I’m not in them even though I’m there doing whatever it is that we’re doing as a family.

This was from our trip to Yellowstone last fall. We couldn’t do a big enough selfie to get our limo stroller in there with the babies but this was a pretty fun candid shot of the three of us!

And if I’m not in the pictures with everyone they might not remember those moments as easily. “Dad is there in the picture but was Mom there?” I want my kids and grandkids to know I was there and that we had fun, whatever it was we were doing.

So what do we as mothers need to do to become a selfie mom?

Stop Worrying about Your Weight

I say this one because it’s something I’m working on as well. My body after four babies is not where I want it to be exactly but I’m a work in progress. I was initially scared to post this picture on Instagram but it’s proof I swim with my kids, even if I’m not what I’ve weighed before.

If you wait to start taking pictures with your kids until you are the “right size”, you might miss out on the adventure all together. Pictures are a great way to measure progress.

Change your mindset to when you look at those pictures, you recall the memory, the fun you had, the thrill of being together and all the laughter those moments brought. Look at your smile rather than the imperfections.

Don’t worry about how you look-All the Time

Some situations call for a certain standard of dress but in the everyday mom moments, perfect hair and makeup isn’t a requirement. If it makes you feel better and you already get ready every morning, keep it up! But just know that if it gets a little messed up from playing with the kids, take the picture anyway.

Yikes! This is me, fresh out of bed, still pregnant with the triplets and C was teasing me about my crazy hair. So I took a pic and he thought it was so funny! It’s a great way to show your kids that life isn’t perfect and that they can let loose and be a little crazy every once in a while.

Do things with your kids and then document it

It can be easy to get into the same routine day after day and not do anything different with your kids. But some of the best times are spur of the moment activities or planned activities that are away from the everyday mundane.

We got hit with a lot of snow this year and so we had Max pull us around on a sled down the streets. It was a lot of fun and this picture was a quick picture right before we got started. A successful spur-of-the-moment picture.

Get the kids out to a museum, a store or even a fast food playplace and document it. Sometimes your favorite pictures come from something totally unexpected that you were able to catch.

Just do it & Have fun

With time and practice, we all get better at things for the most part. Get rid of the voices or the opinions of other people and just take the picture! The nice thing about this is you don’t have to wait until you develop the film the check the picture.

Take dozens of pictures and then delete the ones you don’t need. The lighting might not always be perfect but then again, not every picture you take is going to go up on your social media platforms. There is probably no way I can get all the kids looking at the camera at the same time but sometimes that’s the beauty of it–the candid, “this is life” pic can tell more than a perfectly posed and stylized one.

And remember that it doesn’t always have to be a perfect smile. Throw in some crazy faces and some fun poses to help you better remember the day with or without a picture.

Just take the pictures. Some people say they want to live in the moment and not be worried about pictures. Balance the two, because there is no way you can completely remember every moment but a picture can send you right back to the situation and most of the details surrounding it.

  1. Oh, I am so with you. If my kids and I are having fun, I want to remember those moments. My own perspective is skewed because one of my kids had cancer, and that was terrifying. (He’s better now.) I don’t want to risk losing a single memory, so I take all the pictures.

    1. I’m so glad he’s doing better! That’s my biggest thing and it helps to take pictures to share with my husband when he’s gone 🙂
